Skilled migration is still important for the Australian government despite the recent economic downturn. Skilled migration is designed to attract highly skilled individuals, under 50 years of age, into Australia. The process involves obtaining a successful 'skills assessment' from the appropriate skills assessing body first (often the most difficult part of the application). On approval, the application can then be lodged.

How we can help:

We can advise individuals whether or not they meet the basic criteria and whether they score enough points to meet the pass mark (if required), or if they qualify for a non points tested visa. We can guide individuals through the skills assessment application, prepare and submit applications, advise on the supporting documentation required and liaise with the relevant authorities. The distinguished talent visa category is not points tested. It is designed to allow people of extraordinary or "distinguished" talent to either apply to stay in or migrate to Australia.

In order to be eligible to apply you must be "internationally recognised" for having obtained an "exceptional and outstanding achievement" in one of the following:

  • a profession
  • the arts
  • sport
  • research or academia.

It is mandatory for the applicant to currently be active in their field of expertise. You also need an eligible person or organisation (a sponsor) to nominate you for this visa.

If the visa application is successful the applicant is granted permanent residence status in Australia.

Australian Permanent Residence

Once you have been granted permanent residence in Australia you are permitted to do the following:

  • live and work in Australia on a permanent basis
  • study in Australia at school or university
  • receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
  • access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
  • be eligible for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
  • sponsor people for permanent residence.
